Stone that holds.
Built on what you don't see.

A paver patio is 80% base prep and 20% stone. Most failures in Austin — settled patios, cracked walls, standing water — trace back to shortcuts in the part nobody photographs. We don't take them.

01 · Why ours doesn't move

A patio is a foundation. We treat it like one.

Central Texas soil — expansive clay and limestone — will destroy a hardscape built on a four-inch base. Paver joints crack, walls lean, water pools where you didn't want it. Then it's a repair job, not a warranty job.

We build on a compacted six-to-eight-inch base, on the right aggregate, with proper edge restraint, correct slope for drainage, and a technical specification the client receives in writing. It costs slightly more than a shortcut job. It's also the reason we've had zero settled walls since 2020.

02 · Anatomy of a patio

Eight inches under every stone.

What we build beneath your patio isn't glamorous. It's just the reason it'll still look right in fifteen years.

Layer 1 Compacted subgrade Native soil scraped level and proof-rolled with a vibratory plate. Any soft spots removed and replaced with select fill before base goes down.
Layer 2 4–6" flexible base Crushed limestone road base compacted in two lifts to 95% Proctor density. This is the layer that keeps the patio from settling — and the one shortcut crews skip.
Layer 3 1" bedding sand or chip stone Screeded to exact grade with a slope of 1.5% away from the house. Ensures uniform support and prevents point-loading under individual pavers.
Layer 4 Polymeric joint sand Locked into the joints and activated with water. Prevents weeds, resists washout, and stays flexible through the freeze-thaw cycles Austin gets every winter.
Layer 5 Edge restraint Concrete curb or steel edging pinned every 12 inches. Without it, the patio pushes outward over years and the whole grid shifts. Non-negotiable on every build.

A pool deck cut into a hill.

A 22-foot grade change made the back of this Westlake Hills yard unusable. We built a limestone retaining wall system and a two-tier paver terrace with the pool on the upper level and dining below. Every retaining wall has a drain behind it — no pressure buildup, no movement, ever.

05 · Materials we trust

Short palette. Long performance.

We spec what we've installed hundreds of times and what we know ages well in Central Texas. Every material below is available in our studio sample library — you can see and touch it before deciding.

  • Lueders limestone — native Texas stone, weathers to a warm grey-brown
  • Belgard & Pavestone pavers — clay or concrete, both available in 12 colorways
  • Travertine pavers — stays cool underfoot, ideal for pool decks
  • Corten steel edging — rusted finish, ages to a deep bronze
  • Architectural cast stone — for walls that need to match existing masonry
  • Decomposed granite & basalt gravel — for paths and dry creek beds

06 · Hardscape FAQ

What clients ask us most.

Straight answers to the questions that come up on nearly every hardscape estimate.

How much does a paver patio cost in Austin?
Expect $28–$40 per square foot for a standard concrete paver patio installed with proper base and edge restraint. Natural stone like limestone or travertine runs $45–$70 per square foot. A typical 400 sq ft patio lands between $12,000 and $18,000. Every estimate we write is fixed-price — no "starting at" ranges.
How long does a hardscape build take?
A simple paver patio runs 5–8 working days. A retaining wall system with terracing takes 2–3 weeks. A full outdoor kitchen with utility rough-in takes 4–6 weeks. Weather delays are real in Central Texas — we build slack into the schedule and tell you honestly if we think we'll need it.
Will my patio crack or settle?
Not if it's built right. Settlement almost always traces to inadequate base depth, poor compaction, or missing edge restraint — none of which we do. We warranty workmanship for two full years and offer a written technical spec on every build. In five years we've never had to repair a patio for settlement.
Do you handle drainage and grading?
Yes. Drainage is part of every hardscape we build, not an add-on. We manage slope so water flows away from the house, install French drains or dry creek beds where the site needs them, and coordinate with your existing gutters and downspouts. Retaining walls always have drainage aggregate and weep holes behind them.
Can you match existing stone on the property?
Usually, yes. We source from the same quarries and suppliers who built most of the limestone work in Travis and Williamson counties. If your existing stone is a specific colorway, send us a photograph and dimensions and we'll confirm whether an exact match is available. If not, we'll tell you straight rather than proposing a near-miss.
Do you install gas or electrical for fire pits and kitchens?
We do all the rough-in work — running gas lines, electrical conduit, and water supply — under our own licensed tradespeople, and we coordinate inspections with the city. We install the appliances and fixtures as part of the build. If your outdoor kitchen needs a specific brand of grill or refrigerator, we'll spec to it.
Is permeable paving an option?
Yes, and in some Austin jurisdictions it's required for large paved areas to manage stormwater. We install permeable pavers with open-graded base and joint material, and we also build traditional impermeable paving with on-site retention where the site allows. We'll tell you which makes sense for your property.
